Random Acts of Photography, Autumn Edition

Autumn Colours on the Grand Canal in Dublin

I spent a couple of days over the past week out shooting some Autumn photographs for both my library and for a video I wanted to make. As I’ve said on this blog many, many times, Autumn is my favourite time of the year. Everywhere just explodes with colour, and the light at this time of the year is fantastic too, when it’s actually sunny, of course. You end up with a warm golden light for much of the morning, and it makes everything look that much more inviting and cosy.

I actually have a ton of Autumn photos in my collection, but to be honest, they’re all pretty dated now. My techniques for shooting and editing have changed so much over the years, not to mention the fact that my camera is much more capable now, in terms of both resolution and dynamic range, so I wanted to get out and start building up a new library of photos. Maybe I will do a book at some stage.

I also wanted to shoot a video for this too. I did actually create a video a long time ago about this topic, but I wasn’t hugely happy with it, and I kind of missed the point I was trying to make. You often think of Autumn photography as something you need to do out in the countryside, be it in a forest or in the mountains, and obviously that can get you fantastic results too, but even if you live in the city, you can get great Autumn shots too. You just have to keep your eyes open and look everywhere. From fallen leaves to canopies of gold, Autumn shots are everywhere in the city.

So below is just a small selection. I actually shot a lot more, and I’ll have some more posts coming over the next week or two. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out the video on YouTube. It’s good, honest! I’m also bringing back the newsletter, so if you want to get updates on my photographic adventures, you can sign up here on Substack!
